How To Build a Modern Smart Home

Building a new home can be exciting.  With rising costs, at times it can be stressful to think about all the design, choices and budget considerations. For many, it can be easy to overlook smart home technology infrastructure while making important decisions about elements like home layout, bathrooms and kitchen design. Why are connected homes not an automatic element to new home builds?  The easy answer is that the building industry is catching up to technology infrastructure for modern day home builds.  As connected homes or smart homes are a newer category ( electrical and plumbing infrastructure have been in place for about 100 years)  Indoor plumbing began in the mid 1800s but it wasn't until the 1930s that plumbing codes were created to support public heatlh and prevent outbreaks of diseases related to poor plumbing or lack of infrastructure in homes.  Around this time indoor plumbing became more common in homes and not just an item for the wealthy. And appropriately, Team Zetabots has named their robot She-Ra, the  fictional superheroine in the 1985 Filmation series She-Ra: Princess of Power. The team formed in September and began designing and building She-Ra from the ground up.   They went to their first competition of the season with their robot barely functioning.  They scored zero points.  While many people would feel...

Successful Smart Kitchen & Bath Design Approaches

Image
In 2021 alone the world spent 600 Billion in home improvements.  Much of that spend resulted in new kitchens and baths.  Clients, builders, remodelers, interior designers and other key trades are asking - how do we modernize these spaces with technology?  How do we bring the elements of a smart home to life within these projects? All design starts with understanding the client and how the space and technology can serve them best.  Technology design is no different.  Matter of fact, it is really important not to stuff technology into a space for the sake of doing so - smart home technology needs to serve purpose, be well designed and accessible. That's when the magic happens.  That's when technology works consistently. That's when it is awesome.   We find that many people are overhwhelmed by the many products and capabilities out there.  Where to start? What to buy? What to wire for? (hint, most technology really isn't "wireless")  Ou...

5 Home-Tech Trend Takeaways from our CEO

Image
5 Home-Tech Takeaways    Jennifer Mallett, CEO,   Level Up Your Home   5 Takeaways of where we are today 1. Expertise in technology sales and home service   is key to bridging the gap between current technology promises in the smart home and what actually happens — especially as it relates to interoperability. Custom integrators know more about this topic than security, insurance and manufacturers! It begs the question: How can we become more involved and our voice represented at industry conferences? I hope to see the   CEDIA   channel represented more next year through attendance and participation at the event. It’s a time investment for individual businesses, but very much worth the time. We have an opportunity to be a part of the early stages of IoT so we can facilitate easier installs and basic needs of our clients that are being missed – as well as the overall go-to market strategy as whole. 2. The service provider industry ...
